VOLUNTARY MEDICAL DETOXIFICATION
Withdrawing from a physical dependency on drugs or alcohol can take several days, requiring medically trained supervision. Someone who rarely drinks but gets drunk at a party can recover in 24 hours and return to work on Monday. But a chronic user takes much longer to detoxify.
Our Voluntary Medical Detoxification (VMD) unit has 24-hour nursing care and living space for eight men and four women who are 19 and over. Clients receive services from a team of professionals including nursing, counseling and case management staff. Although the majority of clients in VMD are alcoholics, many are also dependent on other substances, such as methamphetamine, cocaine, or marijuana.
VMD is a crucial first step before committing to treatment. During their time in detoxification, individuals deal with physical symptoms and come to terms with chemical use while considering long-term changes in their lives.
DEFINING VOLUNTARY
While every individual entering our Detoxification program does so voluntarily, it isn't without some devoted and caring individuals holding their hands. Interventions are held. Tears are cried. Families beg and plead. Ultimatums are given and reasons. All in hopes that their loved one will take this first step to recovery.
Cornhusker Place staff is sometimes the "family" doing the convincing. We offer that open bed. We describe the ways we can help. We assure them we'll be there for them.
The door is always unlocked for those in Detoxification to leave whenever they wish. But our staff members do their best to keep them in the program. "Will you stay for just one more meal? For just one more hour? For just one more minute?"
