CIVIL PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

Civil Protective Custody (CPC) helps individuals who are determined by law enforcement to be unable to take care of themselves or pose danger to themselves or someone else due to their intoxication. Individuals are brought to Cornhusker Place by law enforcement officers to safely begin the detoxification process under medical supervision.

Our CPC program has beds for up to 22 men and women; minors ages 14 to 18 can also be admitted. Individuals admitted are held until completely sober or released to a “responsible person,” or for a maximum of 24 hours.

Ever since the Nebraska Legislature passed legislation in 1979 decriminalizing public intoxication, people have needed a safe place to stay if they appeared to pose a danger to themselves or others. Since the early 1980’s, Cornhusker Place has served as this safe and caring place.

The words "public intoxication" bring several scenarios to mind. Perhaps you think of that transient man always asking for change on the corner. Or you envision a college freshman who consumed much more than she intended. Maybe you remember the rowdy football fan who enjoyed a tailgate party a bit too long. Or even the young guy who became an active methamphetamine user before he could even understand what was happening

Our Civil Protective Custody program sees them all. We provide a medically supervised, safe place to begin the detoxification process and an opportunity to intervene with each client served regarding the circumstances that brought them to this program.

If our CPC program did not exist, individuals admitted into our program would instead be lodged into a jail facility. Jails would be overflowing every weekend, and the cost to taxpayers would be enormous.
